In a clash of the top two men’s hockey teams in Pool A, Rio 2016 gold medallists Argentina will go up against world No. 1 Australia at the Oi Hockey Stadium on Tuesday morning.
The Australian men’s hockey team has been unstoppable at the Tokyo Olympics so far in its first two games, having defeated hosts Japan 5-3 and India 7-1.
World No. 7 Argentina began their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Spain and beat Japan 2-1 in their second match.
Australia have had goalscorers galore already, with Tim Brand, Blake Govers, Joshua Beltz, Flynn Andrew Ogilvie, Jeremy Thomas Wayward, Daniel James Beale, Aran Zalewski and Thomas William Craig all on the scoresheet in Tokyo.
Pau Quemada Cadafalch, Nicolas Santiago Keenan and Jose Leandro Tolini have been the three goalscorers for the Argentina so far.
Australia, the Athens 2004 champions, will start firm favourites on current form. It remains to be seen if the Argentinian defence can withstand the onslaught of Australia’s fast, pressing style. On Sunday, the Aussies left the experienced Indian defence with no answers.
The top four teams out of six from the pool will make it to the quarter-finals. New Zealand, India, Spain and Japan are the other teams in Pool A.
The Argentina vs Australia men’s Pool A hockey match will start at 6:00 AM IST on Tuesday, July 27.
