The 2020 Tokyo Olympics is in full swing, and golf is about to join the mix. The first round of the men’s competition starts on Thursday evening in Japan but Wednesday night back here in the United States.
There are a number of different and fascinating storylines to keep tabs on in Round 1 and throughout the week. Sungjae Im and Si Woo Kim of South Korea will be playing for a medal that would keep them from having to enter mandatory military service in their home country. Hideki Matsuyama is trying to back up his Masters victory in April with gold in his home nation. And a United States team with twice as many entrants as anyone else is trying to see how many medals it can collect.
Add it all up and you get some fun primetime golf on Wednesday night (and into early Thursday morning) to go with all the swimming, gymnastics, water polo, archery and beach volleyball that will be taking place. This is just the second time since 1904 that golf will have a podium at the Olympic Games, but it should fit in nicely with everything else that’s going on this week in Japan and should be a blast to cover and follow over the next four days.
