Socceroos vs Saudi Arabia, 8.10pm AEST: LIVE — The Socceroos are back on home soil for the first time in over two years, and for three overseas-born members of the squad, Thursday night will be their first chance to play on Australian soil.

Australia currently sit second in Group B behind Saudi Arabia, who have won all four of their games so far, making this a massive clash in the race to secure the Socceroos’ fifth-straight FIFA World Cup berth.

The Socceroos lost to Japan in their last outing – a team Saudi Arabia’s Green Falcons beat five days prior – ending an AFC-record 11-game win streak and losing out on top spot in Group B.

With Japan shaking off their sluggish start to the final stage of qualifying, the Socceroos will be desperate to use a long-awaited home advantage to claim all three points and reaffirm their bid for a top-two finish and automatic qualification to Qatar 2022.

But without key midfield duo Aaron Mooy and Tom Rogic (club duties and injury, respectively) the pressure is on Graham Arnold’s men – especially returning goalpoach Jamie Maclaren and other Australian-based players – to end Saudi Arabia’s eight-straight win streak.

However, Saudi Arabia are bullish of ending a 24-year run without victory over the Socceroos, having only beaten Australia once, in Riyadh at the 1997 Confederations Cup.

“We have beaten stronger teams than Australia, and with the current group of players we are able to return from there with full points,” said Saudi defender Ahmed Sharahili on Sunday.

For Australia, back on home soil after 763 days away – and against a Saudi team with seven of their past eight wins at home – the advantage of a big crowd in Parramatta looms as vital.

“It’s just so great to be back in Australia,” Socceroos coach Graham Arnold said.

“The boys have come into camp with a lot of energy, some of them caught up with their families.
