Hofstra @ No. 20 Maryland
Current Records: Hofstra 1-2; Maryland 3-1
What to Know
The #20 Maryland Terrapins will take on the Hofstra Pride at 6:30 p.m. ET Friday at Xfinity Center. Given that these two teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this game.
The point spread favored the Terrapins on Wednesday, but luck did not. They were within striking distance but couldn’t close the gap as they fell 71-66 to the George Mason Patriots. The top scorers for Maryland were forward Donta Scott (18 points) and guard Eric Ayala (17 points). Scott had some trouble finding his footing against the Vermont Catamounts on Saturday, so this was a step in the right direction. Donta Scott’s points were the most he has had all year.
Meanwhile, Hofstra came up short against the Iona Gaels on Tuesday, falling 82-74.
This next contest looks promising for Maryland, who are favored by a full 11 points. They may be expected to win, but bettors beware: they are only 1-3 against the spread when favored.
The losses put Maryland at 3-1 and Hofstra at 1-2. Two stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: The Terrapins are stumbling into the matchup with the 40th fewest takeaways in college basketball, having accrued only 11 on average. The Prides have had an even harder time: they are 28th worst in college basketball in takeaways, with only 10.7 on average. It’s possible one of these Achilles’ heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
